Welcome

Cationic coatings are not commontly used by the decorative paints industry and when used it is not often advertised regarding the source of its technology but its application properties.

Cationic paints are used mainly for its stain blocking properties as a primers, also because they have outstanding adhesion properties on most common substrates. High binder prices, not often compatibility with cheap fillers as calcium carbonates and with most of tinting systems, need for dedicated factory facilities or the need of cleaning them before of using them for anionic paint manufacturing, makes formulators and industry in general, avoid its use and try to obtain similar performances with a lot of formulating efforts, which include specific and expensive raw materials.

Cationic paints are not this expensive regarding its performance. However there are a number of cationic properties which are not required for most of common needs and cheaper paints are widely available.

We think cationic technology has a big potential for development. It provides a nice story to sales force to approach customers and there are several fields where cationics can be used with no competitor technology. Wood tannin blocking varnishes, high performing stain blocking paints, outstanding adhesion on most common substrates without additional formulation efforts, film protected coatings agains microorganisms without common used biocides... these are properties you will find analysing information supplied by this blog.

This Blog aims to be a meeting point for all those interested in cationic technology applied to decorative paints, providing a place where sharing info, making and answering questions and learning about it.

Let's start right now!

  1. hi positive paint blogger. We as Croda produce two cationic acrylic emulsions. MyCroFence AM 215 is a safe and durable antimicrobial binder. MyCroFence AM 216 is developed as a co-binder for AM 215. AM 215 and 216 can be used to formulate antimicrobial wall paints that protect against fungi and harmful bacteria.

Please contact me if you like to receive more information about these binders or our antimicrobial technology in general.
